People & Planet

The People and Planet organisation is the largest student network in Britain campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment.

As a partnership, Green Chester and the People and Planet society have achieved a great deal together in a very short period of time. We work closely with their student representatives at the University and the main projects we have collaborated on so far include:
- Go Green Week – A week of varying activities based on the University campus aimed at making people more environmentally conscious on a range of ‘green’ issues. Find out more by visiting http://peopleandplanet.org/gogreenweek
- Nature’s Garden –a staff/student volunteer run allotment, is situated on the grounds of one of the University of Chester’s accommodation buildings. This space that enables all students and staff, experienced or beginners, to grow their own fruits, vegetables and flowers. Find out more by visiting https://www.facebook.com/chesterallotment
The People and Planet University League is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance. The University of Chester is currently ranked 21st out of the 154 institutions that took part in the 2017 submission, gaining a First Class Award. We aim to improve our position each and every year and aim to be in the top 10 by 2020. Find out more by visiting https://peopleandplanet.org/university-league
Fossil Free Declaration
In April 2017 the University of Chester joined 48 other UK Universities in pledging our commitment to not invest in Fossil Fuel industries. Prof Tim Wheeler, Vice Chancellor stated "
"We think it is important that efforts are made to stay within the parameters of 1.5 - 2 degrees limit of global warming, as signed by 195 countries at the Paris Climate Change agreement in 2015. We have therefore decided to confirm our commitment to the Fossil Free Declaration and, in doing so, our aspiration to be a part of the transition to a low-carbon economy.”
We endeavour to keep working on a range of environmental projects together so that we can further ‘green’ the University of Chester. To keep up to date on our daily activities you can follow either group on https://www.facebook.com/greenchester or http://www.facebook.com/uocpeopleandplanet
